SPOKANE, Wash. A person of interest was shot and killed by authorities Tuesday afternoon near Standard and Jackson. Officers were already in the neighborhood investigating the murder of a woman when the suspect burst through a police barricade.
The fatal shooting happened near Jackson and Standard. Police had closed off the area earlier in the day when a body was found inside a home. Neighbors said the female murder victim was dating the suspect.
Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub said the person of interest got out of a vehicle with what appeared to be a gun and was shot by officers according to Straub. Witnesses also said the man had what appeared to be a gun. However, one witness believed the gun was fake.
A KREM 2 News crew was in the area and heard several shots fired. The crew caught the commotion of a close friend of the suspect right after the shots were fired. He tried to leave the scene after he witnessed his friend get shot.
Officers said they took lifesaving measures on the scene after they shot the person of interest. The man who was shot was on Horseshoe Lake in Pend Oreille County less than a week before he was killed. He was painted as a hero by his girlfriend (not the same woman found dead in N. Spokane Tuesday) after he rescued her and a child.
The man shot by police also had an unusual past according to KREM 2 News record. His name came up several times during a search of KREM records.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner will release the name of the woman found dead in the house and the man shot by police once autopsies are complete.
The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (SIRR Team) would investigate the officer-involved shooting. The SIRR Team is comprised of the Washington State Patrol, the Spokane Police Department, Spokane County Sheriff s Department and other member agencies. The lead investigative agency would be the Spokane County Sheriff s Office.
