PORTLAND -- A 15-year-old who survived a shooting rampage Tuesday at the Clackamas Town Center also survived an accident last summer that took the life of a driver.
Kristina Shevchenko was listed in serious condition Wednesday morning at Oregon Health & Science University.
OHSU trauma surgeon Dr. Laszlo Kiraly said Kristina Shevchenko underwent successful surgery for chest wounds Tuesday night.
She suffered injuries to her lung and liver and remained in serious condition Wednesday. She was likely in shock, but awake and talking to her family.
It s clear to me she s a very brave young woman ... I think she s doing as well as we can expect due to her support system, he said. Kiraly said she was still at risk for potential complications and infections.
Shevchenko is a freshman at Clackamas Middle College, a charter school in the North Clackamas School District.
Her family told NBC News that she was one of nine family members in van that crashed last August in Clark County on NWLower River Road. The van was driven by Emiliya Shevchenko, 27, according to Vancouver police.
A Beaverton man driving a pickup crossed the center line. He died from the crash injuries and police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The family told NBC that Kristina is happy child who is active in church, and said by the mercy of God she is now in stable condition, but has a long road to recovery.
Kristina routinely walked through the mall every afternoon to get from school to her home, the family told NBC. Clackamas Middle College is across the street from the mall.
Kristina's friend spoke with KGW Wednesday. To add to the irony, Katie Litvinenko was in the van with Kristina in that August accident.
I was on the phone with (another girl) and I heard Kristina in the background screaming, Katie said. She told me that she was hurt and that they were waiting for the ambulance outside, and then she hung up on me. She didnt tell me if it was shot or anything.
Katie described Kristina as survivor and a strong girl who is full of life and loves to laugh.
