Starting this year, big winter storms in the U.S. will be named, just like hurricanes.

But it will be the Weather Channel naming the storms, not the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The Weather Channel announced the decision Tuesday, releasing a list of 26 names with attitude they selected for this season.

Names will help get the word out about a coming storm, thus helping people to better prepare, the agency said.

There's also a social media advantage to naming a storm -- a common name can be more easily talked about and searched for on Twitter and Facebook, also alerting communities in the process.

This year's names include Greek andRoman mythological figures, a Lord of the Rings character, and even a New York subway line:

--Khan
--Luna
--Magnus
--Nemo
--Orko
--Plato
