CHENEY, Wash -- Fire crews battled a 70-acre wildfire south of Cheney, near the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge.

The fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Spokane County deputies blocked off Cheney Plaza Road near Turnbull while firefighters worked to control the flames.

Wind fueled the fire which jumped Cheney Plaza Road. The fire spread to the northeast.

Two homes on the South end of the fire were asked to evacuate, but the evacuations were not mandatory.

About 20 crews from Spokane County Districts 8 and 3 fought the fire assistance from Spokane firefighters.

A single engine tanker was brought in to help douse the flames with water from their.
