PORTLAND, Ore - Roshawn Lenkau loves those video games where he can pretend to be a police officer. He has been fascinated with law enforcement since he was a young kid. He even enrolled in an explorer program with the L.A. County Sheriff's Office before moving to Portland.
What I learned from other sergeants and officers and stuff ... they always tell me nothing can turn into something at any time, said Lenkau.
Any time came Monday afternoon. The 15-year-old was near SW 5th and Stark when he noticed a homeless man brutally attacking another homeless man.
After the first five seconds I'm thinking I can't hope and pray for someone to break up the fight and save this guy, said Lenkau. I'm going to step in and do something.
Roshawn ran over and broke up the fight, but he did not stop there. Using the tools he had from the explorer program he attempted a citizen's arrest on the attacker.
He starts clenching his fists real angry like he's going to punch me in the face, said Lenkau. That's when I pull out my flashlight and shine it right in his eyes.
The blinding light was disorienting. It allowed Roshawn to get his handcuffs on the suspect who is 32 years his senior.
TriMet police arrived and arrested 47-year-old Jared Green. He is charged with fourth degree assault.
Idon't want to see someone die, said Lenkau. Iwas there and could've done something about it.
