COLFAX, Wash. -- Flying carpenter ants have been seen all over the Colfax area.

People in the area said yesterday the carpenter ants were swarming the golf course and seemed to be anywhere there's dirt and bark. One woman said she had to wash her house down and spray raid to get the ants to go away.

A bug specialist at Washington State University said this phenomenon is unusual. He said a weather front may have blew the ants in and now it's mating season. They will now start developing their colonies.

People in the area said the ants don't bite but they are big and annoying.
