NAMPA -- Several homes near a movie theater complex have been evacuated as police investigate a suspicious backpack found there this morning.

The Nampa Police Department's bomb unit has been called to the Edwards Nampa Stadium theaters at 2001 North Cassia Street in Nampa.

Sgt. Tim Randal says the bomb unit was called to the scene after a theater employee found a backpack chained and padlocked to a gas meter around 10:30 a.m. A robot is X-raying the backpack to try and determine what's inside.

The first movie at the complex does not start until 1:40 p.m. The bomb unit is trying to get the backpack removed so the theaters can open on time.

The area around Edwards is blocked by police, including the parking lot between the theaters and Home Depot. Several nearby homes were also evacuated as a precaution.
