WEST LINN, Ore. -- West Linn High School will be closed Tuesday, due to damage caused by a fire Monday afternoon.

The school was safely evacuated after the fire spread into the attic over the gym and set off alarms Monday afternoon.

The fire was raised to three alarms due to the size of the building, but the flames were isolated in an area between the ceiling and roof of the gymnasium, according to Brian Barker of Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.

A maintenance crew doing welding work behind the building accidentally caught a nearby shrub on fire, which then fell against the building, authorities said.

The fire was reported at about 2:20 p.m. All 1,500 kids and staff members were safely evacuated and there were no injuries.

Firefighters spent over two hours opening up ceilings and walls, and cutting holes in the roof to identify and extinguish hidden fires, and remove devastating heat and smoke from the building. Barker said.

School officials said the building sustained significant smoke damage. They have not said whether the closure will be expanded past Tuesday.
