Passengers on the ferry Elwha were asked to put on life vests Sunday night when the vessel lost power in the San Juans.

Washington State Ferries officials said there was a problem with the drive motor in the engine room.

The Coast Guard escorted the ferry back to Anacortes.

The staff handled the situation very professionally and kept anxiety levels down, said passenger David Moss.

The ferry Kaleetan will temporarily replace the Elwha.

No one was hurt.
