PORTLAND A man was arrested at Terry Schrunk Plaza in downtown Portland after police said his dog bit an officer Friday.

Police were conducting walk and talks around the area when one officer stepped into the street to take a picture of people sleeping on the sidewalk, said Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland police.

That s when 22-year-old Daniel Thompson s dog lunged at the female officer and bit her left arm, Simpson said.

Thompson (pictured right) grabbed the dog, and police said he became verbally abusive. He then lost control of the animal, which turned on Thompson and bit his right arm, Simpson said.

Police brought a pole and took control of the animal and then arrested Thompson after a struggle with officers. He was issued citations related to the sidewalk ordinance and for his uncontrolled dog.

Police discovered Thompson is a registered sex offender in St. Helens, Ore.

After he was treated for his bite, Thompson was booked in the Multnomah County Jail. The officer bitten by the dog suffered a bruise on her arm.
