BOISE -- Firefighters experienced a series of frightening moments when a three-alarm fire destroyed a northwest Boise home Thursday night.

Boise Fire Chief Dennis Doan says the house was in the Hill Road and N. Collister Drive area. He says a passerby noticed the flames and called 911 around 9:30 p.m.

THE HOME

Firefighters say the three story, 5,000-square-foot home was being remodeled and no one was inside when the fire started. However, they say flames spread very quickly because sheetrock was missing in places inside the home.

MAYDAY CALL

Doan says within 15 minutes of crews arriving on scene, there was concern that the home was going to collapse and firefighters could be in danger.

As they were making an attack on the original fire, we had a collapse and a mayday call, and actually had to do a rollcall to get the crews out, said Doan.

He says a supervisor on scene made what's known as a mayday call to get everyone back.

He was quite nervous, he saw the walls start to bow out and yelled to his crews we need to get back, we need to get out, and they did but when they came back they were worried one person was missing, so it was pretty intense for a little bit as they did a rollcall, said Doan.

Fortunately, all the firefighters were accounted for.

FIRE SPREADS TO NEARBY HOMES

Chief Doan says the fire only grew worse as embers reached to two other nearby homes.

He said, The crews showed up and there was a exposure to a second home next door already on fire was on fire also, crews made a quick attack and got to knocked down.

Chief Doan said at one time crews were battling all three fires. Firefighters were able to contain both the second and third fires, and keep the damage to the roofs.

The orginal home was a total loss. Two outbuildings were also damaged.
