SPOKANE, Wash. - Firefighters responded to a fatal house fire Friday morning in east Spokane.

The Spokane Fire Department said the fire at Marietta Avenue and Thor Street killed a 66-year-old man. He was on the front porch when the flames broke out.

The man was a known smoker who was terminally ill. Investigators said he was on hospice care. The victim's sister told reporters her brother had wonderful neighbors who helped him a lot.

As is routine in fatal fires, Major Crimes detectives will lead the investigation onto how the fire started. The fire department and investigators expected to be at the scene most of the day.
