SHOSHONE COUNTY, Idaho-- Authorities are responding to the scene of an officer-involved shooting along the Idaho-Montana state line about one mile west of Lookout Pass. Kootenai County authorities confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the shooting involved Idaho State Police trooper.

Around noon on Wednesday, a Shoshone County Sheriff's deputy found the suspect asleep in his car pulled over on Interstate 90 near milepost 73. Officials said the deputy pulled over to check on the man with Idaho State Police as backup. According to authorities, he suspect had a gun with him, and there was a struggle. An Idaho State Police officer shot the suspect. He was taken to Shoshone Medical Center where he later died.

Authorities said the victim was a white male in his twenties but have not released a name. An autopsy will be scheduled at a later time. Officials have not said how many shots were fired.

The Critical Investigative Team was requested for the investigation with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office being the lead agency.
