HOQUIAM, Wash. -- A home where a man had been holed up in a standoff with a SWATteam caught fire and was fully engulfed Thursday morning. The man was suspected of shooting a police officer Wednesday.
Around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, flames began shooting out of the house. Small explosions or gunfire could be heard a short time later. Police backed away from the home as the flames intensified. It was not immediately clear how the fire started.
Earlier in the standoff, officers say the man disabled two police robots that were sent into the house. They believed he had a gas mask that enabled him to withstand tear gas.
The standoff began about 11 a.m. Wednesday when officers attempted to arrest the 49-year-old on an outstanding warrant. The day before they had arrested a 53-year-old woman at the home.
After the officer was wounded, other officers returned fire and the man retreated into the second floor of the house.
The wounded officer was treated for a minor wound.
Neighbors have been evacuated during the standoff.
