DES MOINES, Wash. -- Two former volleyball coaches at Mount Rainier High School in Des Moines are facing criminal charges.

Charging papers say one man allegedly had a sexual relationship with a female player and the second man failed to report the relationship to authorities.

Former assistant coach Chad Siu has been charged with second-degree sexual misconduct with a minor. District spokeswoman Catherine Rogers says the 22-year-old Siu resigned from the school district in March.

"When the allegations came to light, we immediately launched an investigation, put the head coach on leave, because it was alleged he had known about the relationship at some point and failed to report it and that's a crime," said Catherine Carbone Rogers, Highline School District.

According to charging documents, she met with Harley saying she could not play volleyball for Siu again but she did not want to get Siu in trouble. But instead of reporting the relationship, Harley tried to smooth things over.

"Harley delivered the apology letter to her, let her read it, then took it back from her saying she could not keep it for legal reasons," said Rogers.

Later, the head coach apparently e-mailed his assistant coach saying, "She will get no support or sympathy from me or anyone else."

Rogers says head coach Bryan Harley was fired in October after the King County Sheriff's Office and the Highline School District investigated the teenage girl's allegations. The 35-year-old Harley was charged last week with violation of mandatory reporting law.

King County prosecutors say both charges are gross misdemeanors punishable by up to one year in jail.

According to the charging papers, the girl was 16 years old when she had sexual contact with Siu in November 2007 and January 2008.

A police report says Harley is now employed by Alaska Airlines, while Siu lives in Oakland, Calif., and works for Hawaiian Airlines.
