BELLEVUE – Police released video Friday taken from inside a car rigged to catch thieves.  The video from the so-called bait car was taken from an incident in March in which the thief nearly ran other drivers off the road and almost got killed himself when police opened fire.

From the start, the video from the hidden camera in the ashtray shows the thief getting into the unlocked car near Bellevue Community College, trying to steal the car stereo.  He couldn't do it, so he decides to drive away with the car using the keys in the front seat.

He even was seen doing a celebratory fist pump as he drives away onto I-405.

"What he doesn't know is that they are already vectoring in the officers to come get him," said Greg Grannis, Bellevue Police spokesperson.

GPS technology tracked the car until the driver reached a dead end.  As he turned around and came back, he came upon police approaching him.  One motorcycle officer was forced to jump off his bike to avoid the danger.

Another officer determined the chase was too dangerous.  He fired his weapon, and amazingly, the bullet bounced off the windshield and grazed the thief.

Finally, the getaway car was remotely shut down and the doors locked.  The thief was forced to give up.

The suspect suffered superficial wounds.

He pleaded guilty to theft and assault and will be sentenced to prison soon.
