An arson at the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture in Seattle in May of 2001 caused $7 million in damage.

SEATTLE – A woman who pleaded guilty for her role in the 2001 arson at the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture was sentenced Friday to five years in prison and will have to pay over $7 million dollars in restitution.

Jennifer Kolar, 33, pleaded guilty to two counts of arson, conspiracy to commit arson, attempted arson and using a destructive device in the May 21, 2001 fire. It cost more than $7 million to rebuild the facility.

Kolar of Seattle and Lacey Phillabaum, 31, of Spokane reached a deal with federal prosecutors in October 2006. Phillabaum faces three to five years

The Earth Liberation Front claimed it was trying to stop genetic engineering of trees with the arson that destroyed the center on the UW campus in Seattle.

The center's work on fast-growing hybrid poplars did not involve genetic engineering.

Three others were indicted in the UW firebombing.

Briana Waters of Berkeley, Calif. was sentenced last month six years in prison and ordered to pay more than $6 million in restitution.
