SEATTLE - A pregnant woman is recovering after being beaten and carjacked early Thursday morning in Seattle's Northgate neighborhood.

The incident started just after 4 a.m. in the 12000 block of Roosevelt Way N.E.

According to police, the carjacker hit the 21-year-old woman in the chest and stomach then drove off in her car.

Both the woman and her unborn baby are said to be doing fine and her car has been recovered.

According to a neighbor who helped rescue the victim, the woman is in her third trimester of pregnancy.

The woman told one person she had driven to a pay phone booth to make a call because she thought she was having contractions. That's where the incident occurred.

Neighbor Regina Gray heard the scuffle outside her home. She looked out her window and saw a struggle next to a phone booth across the street.

"And this guy was just pushing and kicking with this poor little gal who was seven and a half months pregnant," Gray said.

Gray raced across the street to help, while other neighbors shouted out they were calling 911.

She says the suspect was more than 6 feet tall.

"He really could've injured her severely. Injured the baby. Could've killed her," Gray said.

A pregnant woman was beaten at a phone booth in the Northgate neighborhood early in the morning on May 22, 2008. She told neighbors she'd driven there to make a phone call because she thought she was having contractions.

She says when the suspect realized police were on the way, he jumped in the woman's green Mazda and peeled out of the parking lot.

Gray tried to calm the victim while they waited for police and medics.

"You could see her eyes starting to turn black and blue, and you know a bump starting to swell up a little bit," Gray said. "She had scrapes and bruises on her hands. She was very shook up."

Police say the suspect is a black male, about 6 feet tall, with curly hair, wearing a white shirt and dark pants.
