OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Gov. Chris Gregoire is out of state and has practically disappeared, but her office won't say where she is.

She has scheduled one-on-one interviews with local media Tuesday, but won't say what the announcement is.

Gregoire was set to be the keynote speaker Tuesday at a pre-legislative session forum sponsored by The Associated Press, but her office canceled Monday afternoon. Legislative director Marty Brown will stand in for Gregoire at the forum.

Political analyst David Postman says her press contacts fuel the speculation even further after booking satellite time for local TV interviews for a mystery announcement at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Why all the secrecy?

Attention turns to the Obama administration after losing its nominee for Commerce Secretary.

After Gov. Gregoire was spotted on a flight to Washington D.C. Sunday, some wonder if she was a possible replacement. But the Obama administration told NBC News there is no truth to the rumor.

"I think it's going to be unlikely she'll be named Commerce Secretary which was the most recent rumor. But the way her staff is acting, it makes me wonder what's happening," said Postman.

Some even fear the announcement might be health-related, remembering her public battle against breast cancer in 2003.

"I would hope if it was anything like that, if it was her health, her family, that they would have handled it differently, that they wouldn't be so coy," he said.

Postman doubts the governor would give up her position as state leader after fighting so hard for re-election in a race with a record price tag.

Others sources believe she may play some sort of role in developing the President's new economic stimulus package or perhaps announcing public works funding for local projects like the viaduct.

We'll have to wait and see.

The governor's is scheduled to talk with KING 5 one on one just after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
