PORTLAND - After 112 years of doing business in downtown Portland, Schumacher Furs announced it is pulling out of the city's core and may leave the city altogether.

Schumachers has faced months of protests by animal rights activists. Schumacher has blasted city officials and police for failiing to support him in the face of picketers who appear weekly to try to dissuade customers from buying his coats.

The group In Defense of Animals has conducted pickets to encourage a boycott on furs virtually every Saturday for nearly a year. Portland police have stationed an officer during the protests. The store has often hired additional security.

For months Mayor Tom Potter's office has offered to host mediation sessions between the two sides. Schumacher has refused saying "there's no reason to talk with terrorists." He says the protesters have gone beyond pickets to threaten him and his family. His store has received bomb threats too. "I don't feel safe entering my own store," says Schumacher.

Schumacher says he is discounting every item in his store between now and the move, which will likely happen next March.

Some customers have been told the store will likely move to Bridgeport Village.

He will not identify his new location publicly other than to say it will be on private property where picketers can be kept away.
