Portland mom walking with young sons forced into kidnappers' car

09:38 AM PDT on Friday, October 24, 2008

By TERESA BLACKMAN / KGW.com

GRESHAM, Ore. -- A mother walking with her two young sons in Southeast Portland was kidnapped at gunpoint, leaving the boys alone on the street Thursday night, police said.

Investigators said Martha Contreras, 29, of Portland, was walking in the 17600-block of SE Stark Street with her 11-year-old and six-year-old sons when a car pulled up next to them. Then, a man inside the car forced Contreras to drop her grocery bags and get in, and then the car sped off.

The boys ran to their home nearby and told their dad who called 9-1-1.

Then, just after 7:34 p.m., Contreras called her husband and said she got help from a stranger in the 17500 block of SE Yamhill and used their phone to call him. Police responded and found the woman in a front yard of a house being helped by a citizen. She had no injuries but was clearly shaken up by the ordeal, said Officer Adam Baker with the Gresham Police Department.

Police interviewed her about the incident but they have not released any further details about what happened to her while she was with the kidnappers.

She described their car as a newer, shiny, 4-door gray or silver car, possibly a Honda or a Mercedes-Benz, with a spoiler on the trunk lid, tinted windows and loud exhaust with an Oregon plate similar to SDT227.

She told police the man who had forced her into the car was described as a 25-year-old Black or Hispanic man who spoke English and Spanish, possibly with a Cuban accent. He was 6'1" tall with an average build and was wearing all black clothing with possibly a brown stocking over his face. The driver of the car had a similar physical description.

Contreras said both men were armed with black handguns.

Police are looking for suspects or people who might have seen the abduction take place. Anyone who has information that might help police was urged to call the Gresham Police Tip Line at (503) 618-2719 or 1-888-989-3505.
