Coast Guard searches for missing man near Newport

01:41 PM PDT on Sunday, October 5, 2008

NEWPORT, Ore. - The Coast Guard and rescue crews in the Newport-area spent the day Sunday searching for a man reported to have been swept off a jetty and into the ocean.

Friends reported that the 23-year-old man, who had not been identified, was standing with a friend on the south jetty in Newport on Sunday morning when a large wave swept them both into the water.

Friends rescued one of the men but were unable to locate the second man.

The missing man’s friends flagged down a passing Coast Guard lifeboat crew, who then began searching the area.

A Coast Guard HH-65 helicopter as well as crews from the Newport Fire Department and Oregon State Police assisted with the search.

Searchers discovered a white hoodie that matched the description given by the man’s friends but did not find any other sign of him.

The weather in Newport was reported to be rainy with 10 to 15-knot winds and one to 12-foot seas.
