PORTLAND - Neighbors scrambled early Wednesday to get each other out of an apartment fire that left one woman dead.

The fire broke out just before 12:30am Wednesday in the 1400 block of SW Morrison Street.

Portland Fire and Rescue said a 57-year-old woman died in the fire.

“The apartment complex is predominantly a retirement community,” said Kim Kosmas, spokesperson with Portland Fire and Rescue. The fire broke out inside a fourth floor corner apartment and smoke quickly filled the hallways of the building, according to Kosmas.

“There were two tenants in the apartment on the fourth floor where the fire broke out,” said Penney Peterson, who was staying with her husband and two daughters on the third floor when the fire began.

“A man and a woman live inside,” she added. “The woman didn’t get out in time.”

The man escaped the fire unharmed after a female neighbor carried him out over her shoulder, according to Peterson.

After the fire broke out, Peterson said one of her daughters, Lauren Campbell, quickly began knocking on doors alerting tenants.

“She even passed out because of the smoke,” said Peterson.

Peterson, whose 25-year-old daughter Rebecca lives in the building, said most of the residents were 60 years old or older.

Two people were transported to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

The Red Cross also responded to assist two residents displaced by the fire.

“This was a mattress fire. The sprinklers did go off,” said Kosmas. As of 7:30am Wednesday, there was still no word what set the mattress on fire.

The estimated cost of total damages from the fire was about $20,000, said Portland Fire and Rescue.
