A Beaverton student eerily predicted the deadly dangers cyclists potentially face as he penned a column for his school paper entitled “Please don’t run me over” just a year before being hit and killed by a Tri-Met bus.

Austin Miller was killed earlier this month as he rode his bike home from school at the Arts and Communication Magnet Academy, where he was a sophmore. The teen was hit by a bus that was pulling into a stop at on Farmington just west of Murray.

In the fictional article published under the name Charlie Elsewhere, Miller envisioned a town founded on bicycle commuting, and lamented the influx of cars on the road. The school said they planned to reprint the piece in the paper, The Savant.

“A lot of drivers seem to get frustrated by myself, and other bike loving pedalists. Usually I wouldn’t think so, but attempted hit and runs and getting chased through Mrs. Higden’s Hydrangea garden by an SUV crazed Blackberry loving business man was a slight indication that there may be ridged feelings over the way we ride,” he wrote.

Miller’s parents said Austin was a dedicated bicycle commuter who stressed safety. He always wore a helmet, and he changed his route to school after his mother voiced concerns about the heavy traffic.

“These are dangerous times, and especially for bikers, our fate lies not only in our hands, but in the hands of the drivers of which we share the road. I am glad for every day I reach the X point unscathed, but besides doing everything I can for myself,” he wrote.

"I cannot control you, I can only mutter these few words in a hope that it might do good: please do not run me over."

The 53-year-old driver was put on leave following the crash and was very shaken up and talking to counselors, according to authorities. No charges were filed in the case, but police were investigating.
