Former BYU-Idaho trying for 'American Idol'

01:26 PM PST on Sunday, February 1, 2004

BOISE - A former BYU-Idaho student made the most recent cut in the reality television show "American Idol."

Twenty-four-year-old John Peter Lewis sang his way into the finals Wednesday night on Fox television station. Lewis is from California, but attended BYU-Idaho in Rexburg majoring in music education.

Lewis sang Van Morrison's "Crazy Love" for his audition.

Infamous judge Simon Cowell told Lewis he has a good voice, and looks like a pen salesman. Even so, Cowell passed Lewis on to the next round.
