PORTLAND – Some Oregon athletes are taking their love of soccer to the other side of the world.
A group of 16- and 17-year-old players with Oregon's Olympic Development Program will travel to India as part of the Goals for Girls project.
The program pairs up teams around the world and brings them together for matches.
The Oregon girls will also donate some equipment to the team they’re playing with, whose members they’ve already met from afar.
“We've been assigned pen pals,” said player Sarah Furth. “The first place we're going to, at the Rising Star Campus, we're going to be working with 16 girls. We've been paired up and we're writing letters back and forth to each other.”
The girls head to India just after Christmas and they'll be there through the first week of January.
