PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The Portland Timbers have signed New Zealand defender Ian Hogg for the remainder of the season and traded defender Mike Chabala to D.C. United in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2014 supplemental draft.
Timbers general manager and interim head coach Gavin Wilkinson announced the moves Thursday.
The 22-year-old Hogg recently competed in the London Olympics. Wilkinson says the left back has good athleticism, and the club will spend the rest of the season evaluating him.
Chabala played in nine matches for the Timbers this season. The club acquired him in a trade with Houston in July 2011.
The deal is the second of the week for the last-place Timbers. On Tuesday, they shipped Troy Perkins to Montreal for Donovan Ricketts in a swap of starting goalkeepers.
