SEATTLE – Seattle Storm point guard Sue Bird underwent successful surgery to remove a cyst in her left knee, the team announced today.

The surgery took place Thursday morning, May 9, at the Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Conn. and was performed by Dr. Michael Joyce.

“Sue underwent routine left knee surgery and it was successful,” said Dr. Joyce. “We treated damage that was sustained last year. There were no problems or complications.”

Bird will remain in Connecticut through May and begin rehabilitation immediately. The expected recovery time for this particular surgery is six months. Bird announced on March 12, 2013 that she will forgo the entire 2013 WNBA season due to the surgery.

“Surgery went well,” said Bird. “I feel fine and am at home resting. Looking forward to being back in Seattle with my teammates!”
