The Crimson Tide strengthened their hold on the top spot following their dominant performance against Southern California, picking up 62 of 64 first-place votes. No. 2 Clemson got the other two No. 1 nods, though the Tigers had to work a bit harder to get past Auburn in their season debut.

Florida State moved up a notch to No. 3 after its huge Monday night comeback win against Mississippi. Ohio State and Stanford round out the top five.

The Ducks came in at 23.

► Stock up: Houston. The Cougars gained six positions to check in at No. 7 following their important triumph over Oklahoma.

Stock down: LSU. The Tigers’ loss to Wisconsin sent them tumbling all the way down to No. 22 after being ranked sixth in the preseason.

► Stock up: Georgia. The Bulldogs vaulted seven places to No. 9, cracking the top 10 after outlasting then-No. 20 North Carolina.

Stock down: Oklahoma. On the short end of that Houston result, the Sooners fell from No. 3 to No. 13.

► Stock up: Louisville. The Cardinals made the biggest jump within the poll, climbing eight spots to No. 15.

Stock down: Notre Dame. It was an overtime loss on the road, but the Fighting Irish still took a 12-slot drop to No. 21 after the Texas setback.

New kids on the block: No. 16 Wisconsin, No. 20 Texas, No. 24 Texas A&M.

College dropouts: Southern California, North Carolina UCLA.
