Safeco Field's retractable roof has a broken wheel and axle. That means, during the annual Mariners FanFest, the roof can't move and will remain open.

The Mariners found out about it on Thursday.  The roof has 128 wheels.  Those wheels help move three panels to close the roof.  Unfortunately, the broken wheel and axle won't allow them to shut the first and third panel.

This is only the second time in Safeco Field's roof has failed to shut.  During a Rangers game July 23, 2000, the Mariners couldn't close the roof.  They had to delay the game 54 minutes.  It's the only rain delay in the club's history.

Over five thousand fans attended today's FanFest. Tomorrow, new Japanese pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma is attending.
