Kayaker hangs on until rescue near Warrenton

WARRENTON, Ore. — Coast Guard and local agency crews rescued a kayaker, who was clinging to nearby pilings after his kayak capsized, south of Hammond Marina, Monday.
 
A crew from Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco, Wash., pulled the man aboard and safely transported him to waiting emergency medical service personnel at the marina.
 
The kayaker had been wearing  a life jacket. He denied EMS assistance.
 
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received the 911 relay call at 5:42 p.m. from Astoria dispatchers.
 
A caller reporting his brother, an elderly Vietnam pilot, had been in a kayak that overturned and was unable to get back in.
 
Clatsop County Marine Unit personnel recovered the kayak and took it to the marina.
