PISCATAWAY, N.J. - A Rutgers player injured making a tackle on a kickoff return sustained a horrific neck injury that has left him paralyzed below the neck.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano says defensive tackle Eric LeGrand is resting in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center and will remain there for the near future.

According to a press release from Rutgers, the injury was at the C3-C4 level and emergency surgery was performed to stabilize the spine.

Schiano, who had tears in his eyes during his press conference following Rutgers 23-20 overtime win over Army, talked to his team around noon on Sunday.

“We want to say thank you to everyone for all of your prayers, kind words, and well wishes,” the LeGrand family said in the press release. “We appreciate every single thought. Eric is in good spirits and we are praying for a full recovery.”

Fans were invited to send get well messages to LeGrand.
