SEATTLE (AP) — The University of Washington is going ahead with plans to renovate Husky Stadium without the promise of taxpayer dollars.
The Seattle Times reports the plan discussed at Thursday's Board of Regents meeting would cost about $200 million. Donors would be asked for $50 million. The rest would be raised through bonds repaid through stadium revenue. That includes the possibility of premium seating and selling naming rights.
The renovation would lower the playing field about 7 feet, remove the athletic track and move seats closer to the action.
Husky Stadium was originally built in 1920 and now seats 72,500.
The UW had sought to tap into a sales tax in King County to finance the renovation. Work could start after this season.
