CHENEY, Wash. -- Trevyn Smith rushed for 143 yards and Cameron Higgins threw two touchdown passes as Weber State spoiled Eastern Washington's homecoming with a 31-13 victory Saturday.

Higgins completed 21 of 37 for 235 yards for the Wildcats (3-3, 3-1 Big Sky), ranked No. 21 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision.

For the 14th-ranked Eagles (4-2, 3-1), senior quarterback Matt Nichols threw for 354 yards to become the school's all-time leader with 10,315 passing yards.

Weber State turned a tight game into a comfortable lead late in the first half by using two Eastern Washington miscues to score on a field goal, a safety and a touchdown in the span of a minute and push a 10-7 lead to a 22-7 advantage with 32 seconds left.

A personal foul against Eastern Washington kept alive a Weber State drive capped by Mike Snoy's field goal with 1:32 left in the half. After three straight incompletions from their own 20, the Eagles lined up to punt, but the snap sailed over the head of Cameron Zuber and out of the end zone for a safety with 1:08 to go.

Weber State made the most of good field position on the ensuing kickoff, with Higgins completing passes of 12 yards to Smith and 11 yards to Tim Toone to push the ball to the Eastern Washington 30. From there, Higgins hit Mike Phillips on a floater in the end zone with 32 seconds left for a 22-7 edge.

It was one of two TD receptions for Phillips, who also caught an 80-yarder from Higgins. Toone finished with seven receptions for 52 yards for Weber State, becoming only the sixth player in Big Sky history to eclipse 3,000 yards receiving for his career. Ryan Eastman had three sacks for the Wildcats.

Eastern Washington's Nichols completed 24 of 39 but was picked off three times, snapping his string of 151 passes without an interception.

Tony Davis caught six passes for 131 yards and Taiwan Jones added 64 yards rushing for the Eagles. J.C. Sherritt ran back an interception 36 yards for a touchdown and had 24 tackles for Eastern Washington.
