A mixed-martial arts fighter from Tacoma is appearing nude in ESPN The Magazine’s annual “Body Issue.”

Miesha Tate, 26, is one of the top female stars in MMA. It was announced last week that she will face current UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey at a pay-per-view event on Dec. 28. Both women will also serve as head coaches on the 18th season of the reality show “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Seattlepi.com reports Tate attended Tacoma's Franklin Pierce High School. According to her website, Tate, whose nickname is “Cupcake,” was the only girl on her high school wrestling team and won the girl’s state wrestling title in 2005. She went on to Central Washington University where she joined a mixed martial arts club.

She now trains in Yakima.

In an interview with ESPN The Magazine, Tate explained why she wanted to do the Body Issue.

“I want to show that you can be a cage fighter and still be feminine. I hate the stereotype that women who fight are ‘butch’ or ‘wannabe men.’ It’s nice to be able to embrace being a beautiful, strong woman,” said Tate.

Other athletes with Seattle-area connections appearing in the Body Issue are former Seattle Storm player Swin Cash and soccer player Sydney Leroux, who trained for the 2012 Olympic team while paying for the Seattle Sounders Women.
