Lightning strikes as close as several blocks from CenturyLink field forced the delay of the Seahawks game vs. the 49ers. Play was suspended just after 6 p.m. and resumed about an hour later.

Heavy rain hammered the field but it was the dangerous lightning that caused the suspension of the game. Players left the field and fans were advised to seek shelter, many lined the concourse of CenturyLink.

Referee John Perry announced the delay at 6:05 with 3:13 left in the first quarter and the game scoreless. The game resume at about 7:05.

According to NFL rulebook,  games “should be suspended, cancelled, postponed, or terminated when circumstances exist such that commencement or continuation of play would pose a threat to the safety of participants or spectators.”

"If a referee determines that an emergency warrants immediate removal of participants from the playing field for safety reasons, he can do so on his own authority. "

The National Weather Service said the line of showers and thunderstorms would continue to move through the north Puget Sound Region and east Puget Sound lowlands through the evening, with heavy rain, gusty winds and small hail possible.

People who were outdoors were advised to seek shelter until the threat had passed. The rule is "if thunder roars, go indoors.”
