You’re excited about the Seattle Seahawks run toward the playoffs, but you don’t know the difference between a sideline and a goal line? Here’s what you need to know about the Seahawks playoff chances headed into the final two weeks of the season so you can actually talk to your jersey-wearing co-workers about it.

To make the playoffs as a wild card

The Seahawks win one of their final two games, either Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers (5:20 p.m. on KING 5) or Dec. 30 against the St. Louis Rams. There are also several scenarios that allow the Seahawks to lose their final two games and still get in, but they need other teams to lose as well.

Both games are at home. The Seahawks are undefeated this season at CenturyLink Field, arguably the loudest stadium in the league, so that only helps their chances.

If the Seahawks are a wild card, they will play the weekend of Jan. 5-6 on the road. Depending on how the rest of the season plays out, they would end up facing one of these teams:

-- San Francisco 49ers, who would be NFC West champions.

-- NFC North Champion Green Bay Packers (a rematch of that Monday night game the Seahawks won on a controversial touchdown call on the final play).

-- The NFC East Champion, which would be either the New York Giants, Washington Redskins or Dallas Cowboys. The Seahawks beat the Cowboys earlier this year.

Here are the other bizarre scenarios that will allow the Seahawks to clinch a wild card berth this weekend, courtesy of the Associated Press:

-- Seahawks tie AND N.Y. Giants loss AND Chicago loss or tie, or

-- Seahawks tie AND N.Y. Giants loss AND Minnesota loss or tie, or

-- Seahawks tie AND Chicago loss or tie AND Minnesota loss or tie, or

-- Seahawks tie AND Dallas loss AND Washington loss AND Chicago loss or tie, or

-- Seahawks tie AND Dallas loss AND Washington loss AND Minnesota loss or tie, or

-- Chicago loss AND Minnesota loss AND Washington loss, or

-- Chicago loss AND Minnesota loss AND Dallas loss or tie AND Washington tie

To make the playoffs as the NFC West champion

The Seahawks would need to beat both the 49ers and the Rams, and the 49ers would have to lose their final game of the season against the Arizona Cardinals – the “we lost to Seattle 58-0” Arizona Cardinals. The 49ers will be a decided favorite in that game.

If the Seahawks do win the NFC West, they could play the weekend of Jan. 5 and 6 and host any of a half-dozen teams that are currently still in the hunt.

There’s also the chance they could finish as the No. 2 overall seed. In that case, the Seahawks would get a bye week and not play their first game at home until the weekend of Jan. 12-13 against one of the wild card game winners from the previous week.
