KIRKLAND, Wash. -- USA women’s soccer goalie Hope Solo and “Dancing with the Stars” pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy were at a Seattle-area dance studio Monday, practicing their routine for next week’s season premiere.

After wrapping up the last of their practice sessions at Kirkland Dance Center, Solo was flying out to attend a Team USA function in Kansas City.

Solo, whose strong play in goal helped the U.S. to a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics and a second place finish at this year’s World Cup, will be competing against 11 other celebrities this season.

If history holds, Solo has a very good chance of winning the competition. In 12 seasons, six athletes have danced home with the trophy and four have been runner-up.

Solo doesn’t sound convinced, saying that “Maks” is having to teach her how to walk in heels.

“I don’t understand why people say athletes have the advantage because, for me, it is the exact opposite. My body does what it wants to do because it’s been trained in this way for 20-some-odd-years, and now you’re telling it to do everything it’s gone against. So I think it’s a disadvantage. The only thing I have going for me is my work ethic and my commitment,” said Solo.

Don’t think her stint on “Dancing” means the end of her soccer career. Solo said she wants to be in goal for the U.S. again in four years at the Women’s World Cup.

Solo will also be appearing nude in ESPN Magazine’s “Body Issue” next month. The annual issue features male and female athletes posing tastefully nude to show off their physique.
