NEW YORK (AP) — A year after leaving Seattle, Jets general manager John Idzik says the Seahawks playing in the Super Bowl is "special" for him.
Idzik, hired by the Jets in January 2013, spent six seasons in the Seahawks' front office and helped build the team into a Super Bowl-caliber squad. He says after spending so much time with everyone in the organization, "you really wish them well."
Idzik, speaking Saturday at a midtown restaurant renamed "Jets House" for the week, says the team extended Rex Ryan's contract despite the coach having another year left for "stability."
He also says he has spoken with quarterback Geno Smith and has no concerns about his judgment despite some off-field issues this offseason. Idzik added, however, that he doesn't view any "free passes" for any players.
