PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Damian Lillard scored 26 of his 28 points in the second half, helping the Portland Trail Blazers edge the Sacramento Kings 109-105 in a preseason game last night. Lillard had 18 during the third quarter, when the Trail Blazers opened a 19-point lead. Reserve Mo Williams added 17 points for Portland. Patrick Patterson scored 27 points for Sacramento, and Isiah Thomas had 15.
UNDATED (AP) — Alabama and Florida State hold the top two spots in the first BCS standings of the season. Oregon was a close third behind second-place Florida State. The Ducks have only played one team that was ranked at the time, but could get a boost in the next two weeks with games against UCLA and at Stanford. The top two teams in the final standings after the end of the regular season play in the Rose Bowl for the national title in January.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti complained following the No. 2 Ducks' 62-38 victory over Washington State about the Cougars leaving in their starters and throwing for two late touchdowns. Aliotti's called out Washington State head coach Mike Leach, calling the tactic "low class." Cougars quarterback Connor Halliday played the entire game, completing 58 of 89 passes for 557 yards and four touchdowns. Halliday's total attempts and completions also broke the Pac-12 records set by Arizona's Matt Scott last season.
SEATTLE (AP) — Don James, the longtime University of Washington football coach who led the Huskies to a share of the national championship in 1991, died yesterday. He was 80. The university said James died at his home from the effects of pancreatic cancer. James coached Washington from 1975-1992, leading the school to a six-pack of Rose Bowl appearances.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) —The Seattle Seahawks will bring former Pro Bowl fullback Michael Robinson in for a physical today after Derrick Coleman suffered a hamstring injury against Arizona. The team confirmed the talks with Robinson yesterday. Robinson was Seattle's starting fullback from 2010-12, but was cut at the end of training camp.
