BOSTON (AP) — Rookie Brandon Workman struck out nine while picking up his first major league win, allowing one run over six innings as the Boston Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 8-2 last night. Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia homered in the second, giving Workman a cushy 5-1 lead that the young right-hander never squandered. Joe Saunders allowed six runs over five innings for Seattle, including two in the first as the Mariners set themselves back with an error and a passed ball.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says the team does not have any new information yet on the second examination on the hip of injured wide receiver Percy Harvin. Carroll spoke after practice yesterday. Seattle has also been without wide receiver Sidney Rice and without defensive end Cliff Avril.
SEATTLE (AP) — Washington has dismissed sophomore defensive end Pio Vatuvei from its program for a violation of team rules. Washington coach Steve Sarkisian announced the decision in a statement yesterday, saying Vatuvei had numerous opportunities to "display behavior consistent with the values of our program." The school did not release any more information about Vatuvei's dismissal.

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Pelicans say 7-foot center Jeff Withey has signed his rookie contract. Citing team policy, the club is not releasing the terms of the deal with the former Kansas standout. Withey was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round of the draft, 39th overall, and then traded to New Orleans as part of a three-team deal.

ZURICH (AP) — Sweden defenseman Alex Edler has been suspended for two games during next February's Sochi Olympics for a dangerous hit at the world championships. The International Ice Hockey Federation says its disciplinary panel judged Edler's hit on Canada captain Eric Staal as reckless and dangerous. Edler, who plays for the Vancouver Canucks, knocked Staal out of the quarterfinals with a knee-on-knee hit in Stockholm in May.
