NEWBERG, Ore. – Owners of the third-generation 99W Drive-in movie theater in Newberg couldn’t be happier.
The theater is one of thousands across the country forced to make the switch to digital projection by the end of the year, and getting the money for the new equipment was tough to come by.
99W then entered a national contest hoping to win the digital upgrade, and on Sunday the theater’s owners learned they were winners of Honda’s Project Drive-In.
In celebration of the award, the theater, located at 3110 Portland Road, will hold a special event at 6 p.m.
In their heyday, as many as 4,000 drive-ins dotted the American landscape. Today there are only 350 left.
