BOISE -- Authorities say Pierce Park Elementary School in Boise was evacuated Wednesday afternoon due to a gas leak.

The Ada County Highway District tells us the gas line was hit during construction work along the roadway.  A portion of Pierce Park Lane between State Street and Castle Drive was closed.

Firefighters and Intermountain Gas Company employees responded to the leak, which was reported around 1:45 p.m.

School staff tell KTVB that children were evacuated to school's playground. School let out at 3:15 p.m. and buses picked students up at an alternate location to get them home. Staff members worked with firefighters to assist kids who walk home from school.

Parents had to pick up their children from Hill Road. Castle Drive was closed because of the gas leak.

A daycare in the area also had to evacuate their children.

ACHD says the gas line was hit while crews were working to install a storm drain along Pierce Park Lane. The gas line serves homes on Elmer Street, a private road.

Intermountain Gas crews finished repairing the leak around 7 p.m.
