SPOKANE, Wash. -- Leaders with the Spokane Sports Commission have proposed a new start-of-the-art sports complex. The Commission estimated that a $20-25 million building could attract bigger tournaments and sporting events to Spokane County.

Commission leaders calculated that sporting events brought $71 million into the local economy in 2012. They estimated that those events filled more than 60,000 hotel rooms and brought 135,000 participants to the Spokane area.

Sports Commission leaders used those figures and the results of a 2012 study to create plans for  a new sporting venue.

Early plans call for a 127,000 square foot field house. Commissioners released details of the plans in early February. The plans include an indoor track and ice arena.

Leaders proposed two possible locations for the new sporting complex. Commission leaders confirmed that an area north of Riverfront Park is one of the options. They said the other possible location for the field house could be near the YMCA in Spokane Valley.

The project would have to be funded and approved by voters. A report will be released in March detailing the field house plans. Sports Commission leaders said that they hope to break ground in 2014.
