SPOKANE, Wash.-- Park rangers clean up a mess early Tuesday after two barrels of cooking oil were dumped near the Spokane River.

It happened around 8:45 a.m. at Riverside State Park.  Authorities said the barrels were on the bank of the river.

A hazmat crew arrived on scene, and determined the liquid seeping out of the barrels was not hazardous.

Rangers said illegal dumping is a recurring problem at the park, and that limited staff have had to discard tires, construction debris, household garbage, and even the shells of abandoned vehicles.

The parks system has received substantial budget cuts in recent years, and that illegal dumping takes ties up limited resources; Rangers said unfortunately it is sometimes difficult to catch who is doing it.
