PORTLAND – Someone pointed a laser light into the cockpit of a Life Flight helicopter Wednesday while the pilot was taking a patient to the hospital.

The pilot got hit with the light from a laser twice while on the way to a Portland hospital, and again two more times while he was heading back.

Life Flight said those lasers not only temporarily blind pilots, but they also take them by surprise and can cause them to lose control.

"He probably just doesn't realize the danger and messing around and thinks I'm gonna zap that helicopter a couple of times just for fun,” said aviation manager David Anderson. “It's not funny."

It's also not funny if you get caught. Flashing a laser at a plane or chopper means an average fine of $11,000 and can even mean jail time.
