New twists could block the bid to bring the Sacramento Kings to Seattle. The Sacramento Bee reports that a group plans to buy the team and build a $400 million arena in Sacramento and keep the team in California.

According to the newspaper, the potential downtown Sacramento site would be built on the land of a troubled shopping mall. The deep-pocketed investors behind it say they the funding and sketches are already designed.

Longtime NBA writer Ric Bucher also reports the Maloof Family, which owns the Kings, wants to keep a stake in the team. This could be a sticking point in sale negotiations.

On Wednesday, news broke that a Seattle group headed by investor Chris Hansen was close to a deal with the Maloof family, but a deal hasn’t been reached yet.

KING 5’s Chris Daniels reports Sacramento Mayor and former NBA star Kevin Johnson vows to keep the team in place.

The NBA has a March 1 deadline to apply for relocation.
