SPOKANE -- The Idaho Dept. of Correction awarded two officers from N. Idaho Correctional Institute for helping others in a time of crisis.

The agency awarded its Silver Cross Awards to Officer Larry Childers and Officer Michael P. Kaschmitter.

Officer Larry Childers grabbed a fire extinguisher and helped a group of people whose van caught fire on Whitebird Hill in July 2012. Childers recognized the van’s gas tank was about to explode so he ordered the group -- which included children and seniors -- to get back.

In October, Officer Michael P. Kaschmitter performed the Heimlich maneuver on an inmate who he spotted choking in the dining hall. Officials said the aid likely saved the inmate’s life.

Congrats to these two.

What’s your good news of the day?
