SPOKANE--Many first responders around the country are still reeling from the tragic shooting deaths of two firefighters in New York on Christmas Eve.

A case similar to the one in New York hasn’t recently happened in Spokane, but the Spokane Fire Department says it has safety procedures in place to help protect our firefighters.

Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer says an emergency notification was sent out, which reminded firefighters about the dangers of their jobs.  Schaeffer says safety is always on his mind and the minds of firefighter’s families.

Calls like the one in New York haven’t happened in Spokane, but the department still trains for violence.  As for the calls that aren’t for fires, like overdoses or suicide attempts, they bring in police assistance.
