SPOKANE, Wash. -- Police took one man into custody following a SWAT situation in Spokane Valley.

It started around midnight Thursday at 21st and Progress.

Authorities say it started as a domestic violence situation between a husband and wife. The man allegedly fired three shots inside the home and barricaded himself in the basement. The woman then called police.

“She was inside the house the whole time. [She] didn’t feel safe leave the house. We contacted the SWAT team to get her out of there safely,” Sgt. Dave Ellis of the Spokane Co. Sheriff’s Office said.

Several neighboring homes were evacuated during the standoff.

The man gave himself up to officers shortly after 1 a.m.

Police have not yet said what charges the man will face.
